‘Nigeria needs well-equipped researchers for its social problems’

Dean, Faculty of the social Sciences, University of Ibadan, Prof. Ayodele Jegede, yesterday said “Nigeria needs well-equipped researchers to solve her myriad of social problems.” Jegede stated this at the CARTA Graduate Advanced Seminar organised for doctoral students at the Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibadan. According to him, it is now glaring that those lacking skills in data generation and analysis will add to the problems facing the country rather than solving it.

He disclosed that the Seminar was put in place to enhance capacity building for Doctoral students further and that students would be equipped in data generation using quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Dean, Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan, Prof. Jonathan Babalola, while speaking lamented the increasing rate àt which Universities are presently producing half baked professionals. Babalola added that evidence among the cohorts of postgraduate students have in the recent time clearly shown inadequate knowledge in their areas of expertise. He said many found it diffi cult to even defend the research projects they claimed to have conducted and that the postgraduate school has set-up a committee to organise a pseudo-courses that would target some specifi c students to guide and tutor them on what to do in their areas of specialisation. In his remarks, the Director, Offi ce of International Programmes, Prof. Oluwatoyin Odeku, emphasised the need for students to apply for international grants and scholarship to become global scholars.
