Nigeria .ng domains risen to 138,060 – NITDA

Total number of registered .ng domains in the country have risen to 138,060 from inception.


 National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) stated this at the capacity building for strengthening resilience of e-Government initiatives at the NAF Center on Thursday.


NITDA DG, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami who was represented by the director information technology infrastructure services, Usman Abdullahi Gambo, said, the workshop is informed based on the needs identified in “our engagements and seeks to contribute to more efficient service delivery, better value for money, improved access to government services and a safer Nigeria for all.


“We are happy to see the growth trend of .gov.ng and .mil.ng in Nigeria in recent times. The total number of registered .ng domains from inception till date stands at 138,060 (as at April 29, 2019). From this number, 2,274 are  .gov.ng while 278 are .mil.ng. it is worthy to note that the total number of .gov.ng and .mil.ng domains registered from inception till October 2016 were 1,856.

This means that 418 new domains were registered between November 2016 and April 2019 which signifies a percentage increase of 18.3%. 

“We have seen how current silo ICT environments have unclear strategies, employing partial approaches to implementation thus leading to loss of revenue, opportunity and trust in using technology.“a significant pitfall however, for e-initiatives is underestimating the inertia of the public sector.

We have matured technology available to help alleviate inequalities in our society, creating a fair and just nation.He stated that: “To move forward we must unite our resources, efforts and strengthen our collaborative mechanisms.”The first of these strategic workshops was held on the 17th of April, 2018 for CEO’s and heads of MDA’s at the Abuja International conference center.


“This is a continuation of that exercise aimed at ensuring that decision makers at all levels are duly engaged for our collective visioning and coordination of strategy and lesson learning,” Pantami said.


Giving his presentation on building blocks of successful e-services, NITDA head of special dutie, Dr Abubakar Dahiru, said government agencies must first ascertain their status before automating their process.He noted that this initiative is to achieve single window for government.However, “the first thing for an agency before automating your process is to know your status,” he said.
