Nigeria ranks no.1 with high TB in 2019, Zamfara with 20,997 cases in 2021 – Report

A Tuberculosis report globally in 2019, indicated that Nigeria ranked number one in Africa, and sixth globally amongst the 30 high TB burden countries as well as 14 countries with triple high TB burden.

According to the report, Zamfara state has an estimate of 429,000 people with TB.

So far in 2021, Zamfara has 20,997 people who have tested positive to tuberculosis out of which 2,542 were confirmed TB cases in 2020 across the state

This was made known by the Zamfara state Commissioner of Health, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar Kanoma, at a press conference to mark World Tuberculosis Day 2021.

He said Zamfara state government through his ministry partners with colleagues around the world to meet the global target of ending the TB in 2030.

The commissioner urged all stakeholders to join hands with the state government to adopt a multi-sectorial approach towards TB control.

He said the state government alongside it’s partners has expanded its TB treatment centers from 244 to 326, including all private health facilities, adding that TB diagnostic centers were also increased from 147 to 173 respectively.

He said lack of funding, few gene x-pert and low awareness of TB disease among the general population were among the major challenges affecting TB programme in Nigeria.
