Nigeria records 125,790 crime cases in 2016 – NBS

A total of 125,790 crime cases were reported in 2016 across the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory in 2016, crime statistics reported off ences of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has stated. Th e statistics showed that off ences against property had the highest number of 65,397, off ences against persons were 45,554 cases reported while off ence against lawful authority

and local acts recorded the least with 12,144 and 2,695 cases recorded respectively. Th e report with data gathered from Nigeria Police Force but validated by NBS noted that Lagos State has the highest percentage share of total cases reported with 36.08 per cent and 45,385 cases recorded. FCT Abuja and Delta state followed closely with 10.48 per cent and 13,181 and 6.25 per cent and 7,867 cases recorded respectively. Katsina state has the lowest percentage share of total cases reported with 0.10 per cent and 120 cases recorded. Abia and Zamfara states followed closely with 0.29 per cent and 364 and 0.38 per cent and 483 cases recorded respectively. NBS explained that off ences against persons were murder, manslaughter, infanticide, concealment of birth, rape and other physical abuse while off ence against properties are the ones against human belonging, properties of any kind like stealing, receiving stolen properties, obtaining property by false pretense, robbery, burglary and house breaking. Th e report added that off ences against lawful authority include malfeasance against any establishment of the law such as failure to pay tax, which amounted to an off ence against lawful authority and off ences against local Acts, which were unlawfully committed against laws.
