Nigerian Army officer best PhD student in UK varsity

Nigerian Army officer, Lt.-Col. Sikiru Adepoju Mohammed, of the Army Corps of electrical and mechanical engineers, has emerged best PhD engineering student and overall second best PhD student at University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
Sikiru, who holds a bachelor of engineering (mechanical) and master’s degree from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), is currently undertaking a PhD research at the University of Leeds, UK.
The University of Leeds is among the world’s top 100 universities and was named the University of the Year 2017 in the Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide.
The university is part of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), comprising 21 research-intensive institutions spanning five continents.
It holds annual Leeds Doctoral College to showcase research work held across the University.
However, for the year 2017, Lt.-Col. Mohammed’s work emerged best in the Faculty of Engineering and was selected to represent the Faculty in the 2017 University-wide Post Graduate Researcher of the Year competition, where he came second.
The Nigerian Army officer’s research interest “is in the field of additive manufacturing, corrosion and robotics.”
The officer bagged the university’s prestigious award, including cash prize.
Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Mohammed has said he had committed his awarded cash prize to providing teaching aid to the Community Senior High School in Akodo, Ibeju/Lekki local government area of Lagos state, where he hails from in an effort to further his interest in seeing a good number of high school students going for higher learning in engineering related disciplines.
He expressed appreciation to the Nigerian army for the continuous support and opportunity given to him to embark on his research.
He also thanked the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) for the transparency in the selection process that earned him a scholarship, where only one candidate was awarded PhD sponsorship from each state of the federation.
