Abuja

Media in Nigeria is booming and growing fast, hence the rest of the world needs to learn from it, Director General of the International Press Institute (IPI), Barbara Trionfi , has said. Trionfi spoke yesterday in Abuja, at a press conference ahead of this year’s International Congress of IPI which will hold in Nigeria in June. She said the media is currently going through crisis worldwide, assuring that the congress will afford journalists and nations the opportunity to dialogue with one another. “The news media is going through a lot of crisis, crisis in terms of economy; crisis in being able to provide the services and the credibility that are needed. This is the core aspects of all of our works at the congresses. “We feel like in a place like Nigeria, the media is booming and advancing very fast. It is a pleasure to see it. I think the rest of the world has a lot to learn. And I believe we have a lot to learn from each other” She said the congress will give platforms to leading voices in the media, politics and academia from Nigeria as well as the whole of West Africa to explain, accurately, the region’s economic and political development, for the global media to have a proper glimpse. On the programmes lined up for the congress, the IPI’s head disclosed that there will be town hall meetings, panels that will enhance journalistic best practices, workshops on investigative journalism, electoral coverage, hate speech, new technologies, gender, selfcensorship and press freedom.
