Nigerian women farmers can feed nation -SWOFON

The Bauchi state coordinator of the Small Women Farmers Organization of Nigeria (SWOFON) Hajiya Marka Abbas has asserted that if women farmers are supported, they can feed the nation.

She made the assertion Monday during a dialogue on the agricultural joint sector review and the biennial report review organized by ‘Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative’ (FAWOYDI) in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria.

According to her, women are more prudent and economical than men adding that they have the capacity of utilizing minimum resources to achieve maximum results.

She therefore appealed to government to consider women farmers while drafting agricultural budget and sharing fertilizer and other farming inputs.

Also speaking at the dialogue, the project manager of the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Program (BSADP) Alhaji Jafaru Ilelah commended the organizers of the meeting saying it was timely.

Ilelah said the board would partner with non governmental organizations to revamp agriculture in the state pointing out that government alone could not do it as it has too many responsibilities.

He also assured that the recommendations of the stakeholders on how to improve farming in the state would be considered.

Earlier, the program officer of FAWOYDI Mr Tosin Suberu explained that the meeting was aimed at assembling farmers and stakeholders in agriculture  in the state and rubbing minds with a view to boosting food production to achieve hunger free society.

He recommended that the state government should increase its budgetary allocation to the agricultural sector to at least 10 per cent in line with the ‘malabo declaration’ to which the state is a signatory.
