Nigeria’s borders’ll remain closed – Customs

Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hamid Ali (retd) has said all Nigeria’s borders will remain closed and monitored by the combined team of security operatives till further notice.

He said, “The proliferation of illegal arms, illicit drugs, contaminated rice and contrabands that are allowed into our country by our neighbouring countries is affecting our economy”.

Ali stated this Wednesday at Maigartari, a Nigeria/Niger border town while in a drill tour to inspect the ongoing border closure as part of measures to curb the menace of infiltration and border crossing into Nigeria.

Speaking to reporters after addressing the combined team of security operatives, community leaders and civilians at the border town, Ali urged people to be wary of their neighbours and strangers.

He told reporters that, very soon, all strangers in the country would be registered to avoid harbouring criminal elements that will cause problem here and there.

The CG warned that, anybody caught with a bag of rice will serve the maximum prison of three years to serve as a deterrent to others with similar mind set.

He, therefore, appealed to community and traditional rulers for cooperation in order to tackle all cross border transits.

In the visit was the Comptroller General of Immigration, Muhammed Baban Dede.
