Nigeria’s democracy built on NEPU, PRP foundation – Lamido

Immediate past governor of Jigawa state, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has described the advent of the Northern Progressives Elements Union and the Peoples Redemption Party as the foundation upon which the present democratic system in the country is thriving.
Speaking at the 8th year commemoration of the first civilian governor of Kano state, Alhaji Mohammad Abubakar Rimi, held at the Government House yesterday, Lamido said the two defunct political parties had carved a niche in genuine democratic system that had created avenue for the common man to have a sense of belonging.
According to him, both NEPU and PRP strongly fought the phenomenon of injustice, tyranny and crude exploitation at the behest of those who had wanted to use the down-trodden masses in perpetuating elite dominance in partisan politics, pushing the masses to the lower rung of the political ladder, pointing out that it would have been utterly impossible for the masses to wax stronger had such a vicious circle of political repression was not broken.
He said the history of Nigerian politics would never be complete without extolling the good virtues of time tested political icon like the late Malam Aminu Kano who had struggled blood and sweat to ginger the masses to embrace the genuine indices of politics without bitterness affirming that his untainted legacy still remained a source of emulation.
Commenting on the life and time of the late Muhammad Abubakar Rimi and his impact on the political lexicon of the nation, the former Foreign Affairs Minister, maintained that the late political icon had lived and died as a political martyr who had left an indelible mark on the sand of time.
According to him, Kano had during his time witnessed a myriad of unrivaled giant strides which would remain ever green in the memory of the people of Kano, stressing that such giant strides could not have been achieved without his resilience, doggedness and courage.
He pointed out that the late Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar Rimi had deserved all accolades having stood as a true symbol of democracy in contemporary history, calling on the young politicians to follow in his footsteps for them to excel and make their mark in partisan politics.
