Nigeria’s gas reserves at 187trn, 7th globally – FG

Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment Hajia Aisha Abubakar says with a gas reserve of 187 trillion cubic feet Nigeria is rated the 7th globally.

The minister said this at the validation of the draft document on National Industrial Fertilizer production policy on Thursday in Abuja.

The minister said the stability of the county to develop its gas field has led to a situation where gas is wasted through flaring on daily basis.

The minister who was represented by the Director, Industrial Development Department, Engr. Adewale Bakare said the country ought to be one of the largest downstream production hubs for gas related production globally with its huge gas reserve.

According to him, in spite of the challenges in the sector, the fertilizer industry over the years continues to record steady growth.

The fertilizer industry is currently faced with series of challenges such as poor business environment.insufficient infrastructure for the supply of gas, high cost of production, untimely supply and seasonal purchase of fertilizer amongst others .

He assured that the strategies and incentives to drive the industry have also been identified for implementation in the policy.

“Fertilizer blending plants should as much as possible be made to be specific in their packaged technologies in line with the soil map for efficient and effective fertilizer production ,“ he said.

Also, the Commissioner for Trade Industry and Business Development in Bayelsa state, Braboke Stanley said that when the implementation of the policy begins the countru will be able to fully utilized the raw materials to power the fertilizer plants.
