NILDS begins training for parliamentary clerks


The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) will on Monday in Abuja, begin a 5- day training for parliamentary clerks in Nigeria and Gambia.

In a statement issued Sunday, by the Institute’s Communication Adviser, Dr Nwajei Kanayo, the training is part of the  on-going agenda of impacting and strengthening democracies, especially, among West African sub-regional parliaments.

According to him, the workshop is targeted at Committee Clerks from the Gambian National Assembly and their counterparts in Nigeria at  both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The objective, he explained,  is to  introduce participants to best practices in Committee management, acquaint them with practical guidelines that would assist them improve committee effectiveness, entrench a virile bureaucratic parliamentary management philosophy as well as provide a forum for exchange of experience.

He added that the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Dr Mohammed  Sani – Omolori is expected to declare the workshop open, while the Director General of NILDS,  Professor Abubakar O. Sulaiman, the convener of the workshop , will set the tone for the training, in his remarks.

“Participants would be exposed to the roles of Clerks in Legislative Committees, and how to organise effective public and investigative hearings, among other thematic areas”, the statement added
