NiMet trains aeronautical observers, forecasters in Katsina

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has commenced training of 70 aeronautical and meteorological forecasters/observers with a view to ensuring safety in the aviation sector in Katsina.

Addressing the participants at the flag-off ceremony of the refresher course in Katsina on Monday, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu, said the course is part of the agency’s activities to ensure quality in training content and service delivery of the sector to continuously subjecting the WMO review on the latest rue-confirmation with certificates of Management System (QMS) and International Standard Organisation (ISO) in 2019.

According to the DG, the 9th edition of refresher course is not only limited to the aeronautical meteorological personnel of the agency, saying it involved, inter alia, short and specialised courses in agricultural meteorological services.

He said disaster risk reduction, climate change, programme, numerical weather prediction, climate and health, geographical information system, performance management system, among others to mention.

Matazu, who was represented by the director administration and supply of the agency, Hajiya Rabi’atu Muhammad Daku, added: “One of the core areas of activities of NIMET is the Aeronautical Meteorological Services (that is services rendered to the aviation sector). As you may all be aware, in aviation, it is safety, safety and safety. Meteorological Services is one of the key components of this safety of lives and property.

“Aside to training, they are routinely subjected to competency assessments; all in a bid to ensure the aviation safety is not compromised in any form. Today, we are here for the 9th Edition of the Refresher course for Aeronautical Meteorological Forecasters and Observers.”

He thanked Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina state for partnering with the agency in ensuring the success of the exercise in the state.
