Nimrod wants FG to establish marathon training camp in Mambilla

President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engineer Musa Nimrod, has called on the federal government to set up a training facility at Mambilla Plateau for training of marathon runners.

Speaking on the sidelines of the maiden 2020 Kaduna Marathon on Saturday in Kaduna, after participating in the 5km race, Engr. Nimrod urged federal and state governments to put more resources in sports development, noting that with a well-funded sports, #EndSars will not arise as youth will be kept busy and active.  

Basking on the success of Kaduna Runs, Nimrod said if the training facility is set up in Mambilla, it would give Nigerian athletes comparative advantage within and outside the continent and improve their skills to enable the country compete for long distance laurels within and outside Africa.

The NVBF President, who said he started running marathons over 40 years ago and still runs 5km daily, said Nigeria used to be good in marathon in the 70s and 80s when the likes of Yohana Waziri were winning marathon races in the country. 

The former volleyball national team player commended Kaduna state government for organising the marathon, while expressing confidence that the bold step is reawakening marathon competitions in the country. He urged other states to take a cue from Kaduna and assist Nigeria in seeking the lost glory. 

Speaking on the Volleyball League which kicks off on Saturday (today) in Ilorin, Kwara state, Nimrod said it is a big event attracting teams from all over the country.

He said Nigeria will host the Africa U-18 Junior Championship in January in Abuja.
