NIS to personnel: No foreign language, no promotion

Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has said henceforth, any officer who could speak more than one language will easily be considered for promotion.
The NIS authority under the Comptroller General, Muhammad Babandede, revealed this yesterday when he addressed a monthly parade of officers and men of the Service, at the national headquarters in Abuja.

Babandede, who made the disclosure, specifically made particular reference to French, saying promotion incentive will be given to the next rank.
“Sooner than later, immigration officers would have to speak more than one foreign language, particularly French. This is because Nigeria’s neighbours are French speaking and as the nation continues to woo foreign investors from across the globe, the NIS needs to reposition itself to communicate freely with them. As a matter of fact, such communication skill is in tandem with global immigration practices.”
The CGI said, “Future promotion examinations should be done online and the results received real-time.
He explained that such reform “will eliminate manipulation, nepotism, prejudice and general injustice as well as improve the capacity of the Immigration Officer on ICT in a sustainable manner. These will be without prejudice to existing criteria for promotion”.
