NIS tragedy: Security forces foil plan to dump coffins at Interior Ministry

A combined team of police, Immigration and Civil Defence officials yesterday frustrated a planned demonstration by unemployed youths and members of civil society organizations at the Interior Ministry and the residence of the Minister, Com. Abba Moro.
The organisers planned to deposit a corpse either at the ministry or the residence of the minister as a display of annoyance by angry job-seekers representing “Concerned Nigerian Unemployed Youths.”

Blueprint gathered that about four of the organisers who defied instructions to leave the Interior Ministry premises where they had gathered to wait for other demonstrators were arrested and taken away to unknown location at about 4pm.
Our correspondent also gathered that the driver of a pick-up van, who was hired to bring nine empty coffins to the ministry, promptly sped away on sensing danger.
Deputy Director of Information and Media Relations in the ministry, Sir Edwin Opara, told a media man when contacted for comment, “Nothing happened. So, how am I expected to talk when nothing happened?”
