Former Governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Kwakwanso, has called on the Nigerian Institute for Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan, to set agenda for national planning capable of fast tracking the country’s economic recovery.
Kwakwanso, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on National Planning, made the call in Ibadan when he led members of the Committee on an oversight tour of the Institute.
The former Kano state governor said NISER had a lot of potential in formulating enduring policies that “can positively transform Nigeria,” adding that the federal, states and local governments in Nigeria should take full advantage of the potentialities by making the best use of the research documents from the Institute.”
He tasked “NISER to come out of its cocoon and reach out to the government, parastatal, private sector and all other relevant organisations across the country,” saying the management of NISER should step up efforts to ensure that the core mandate of the Institute are not subjudice.”
Kwakwanso noted with concern that “there is a little bit of disconnect between NISER and some stakeholders, particularly the states.”
Emphasising that although NISER “is underfunded the Institute, if well managed, can be self-sustaining, especially with its potentials notably the consultancy services.”
