NITDA, DFID to create 6 million jobs in agric sector

The Department for International Development (DFID) and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), have commenced plans to create six million jobs in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

NITDA spokespersonHadizar Umar, in a statement recently said, the job creation would be realised through implementation of the National Adopted Village for Smart Agriculture project and would be created within space of 10 years in the agricultural sector.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the agency, Deputy Team and Innovation Leader LINKS Bello Yakassai, explained that the project is expected to support the development of a vibrant and diversified economy in three key northern States of Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa.

He added that, “the programme would focus on the development of high potential pro-poor value chains, supporting them to become productive, competitive and attractive for investment at every level.”

NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Abdullahi, in his remarks, said it is now very necessary for the agency to seek means to embed Information and Communication Technology, (ICT) into agriculture.

“Digital economy is the new oil and this form the reason the agency come up with issuance of licences to data companies as part of our regulatory function,” he said emphasising on the essence of ICT to diversifying the economy.

However, describing the regulatory function of NITDA as developmental, Abdullahi noted that the agency was not established to muffle businesses but create opportunities.
