NIWA signs N1.6bn contract for Lokoja River Port


Over N1.6 billion contract for the supply and installation of the sixty-four (64) ton mobile harbour crane has been signed between the management of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Messrs Liebherr Nigeria Limited, for the Lokoja-Jamata River Port Complex.

Performing the signing ceremony at the headquarters of the agency in Lokoja on Wednesday, the Managing Director of NIWA, Dr Adeleke Olurunnimbe Mamora, said the contract was aimed at accelerating the completion of Lokoja port to boost the economic activities of the state and by extension the country at large.

According to him, the recent commissioned of  Baro port in Niger state  was part of President Muhammadu  Buhari’s desire to enhance the nation’s infrastructural development especially in the area of transportation, which he noted was key in the upliftment of economy as well as creation of jobs.

“It is in line with this that we are signing the contract today to compete Lokoja port. We will continue to work simultaneously with the port project and the procurement of equipment that will be needed for the operation of the port when completed in no distance time.

“We believe that the earlier we started the better so that we can easily tackle unforeseen situation that may crop up along the line”

The Managing Director charged the contractor to comply with quality and duration  as spelt out in the contract agreement .

In his remark , the spokesman of Messrs Liebherr Nigeria Limited Mr Jade Dawallyby assured that the company would not renege in its quality delivery, saying they handled Onitsha port effectively and that they are ready to repeat such feat in Lokoja river  port.
