‘No corps member mobilised for war’

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has declared that some people had misunderstood what the Corps’ director-general said in a recent interview on war and military training corps members receive at orientation camps.

This was contained in a statement from the office of the director-general, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, on Friday.

The director-general had stated that, “In line with the National Defence Policy, Corps members are like soldiers on reserve because their education, exposure and sophistication, can make them easily adaptable to military training.”

Gen. Ibrahim said the statement “does not imply that corps members are being mobilised to go to fight as soldiers in frontlines.”

He, therefore, charged corps members to remain focused and patriotic and appealed to all serving and ex-corps members “to live a life that reflects the spirit of NYSC that had been instilled in them in orientation camps.”

The statement read in part, “Brig.-Gen. Ibrahim never at any point said that corps members are being mobilised to fight war. The Scheme shall continue to safeguard the interest of corps members at all times.”
