No plan to re-open borders – Custom boss

The Comptroller General of Custom, Col. Hamid Ali retired said all Nigeria’s borders will continue to be closed and monitored by the combined team security operatives till far notice.


According to him that “due to proliferation of illegal arms, ilicite drugs, conterminated rice and contraband that are allowed into our country by our neigbouring countries is affecting our economy.”


Ali stated this Wednesday at Maigartari, Nigeria/Niger border town while in a drilled tour to inspect the on going border closure as part of measures to curb the menace of illegal infiltration and border crossing into Nigeria.


Speaking to reporters after addressing the combined team of security operatives, community leaders and the civilians at the border town, urged people to be wary of their neighbors and strangers.


He told reporters that very soon all the strangers in the country would be registered to avoid harbouring criminals elements that will be causing problems here and there.


The Comptroller warned that anybody cought with a bag of rice will serve the maximum prison of three years to serve as a deterent to others with similar mind set.


He, therefore appealed to community and traditional rulers for cooperation to tackle all cross borders transit. In the visit was the Comptroller General of Immigration,Muhammed Baban Dede.
