No state in Nigeria has financial autonomy – JUSUN

Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has declared that “there is no state amongst the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory that has financial autonomy as stipulated by the 1999 Constitution.”
Against this background, the union expressed dismay at a statement credited to the Chairman, Ilorin branch of the Nigeria Bar

Association (NBA), Mr. Mobalaji Ojibara, that Nasarawa and Bayelsa states judiciary have financial autonomy.
Describing the statement as “untrue,” JUSUN warned that such unconfirmed statement, especially from a legal practitioner and chairman of a respectable association like NBA “is capable of misleading the public.”
The union said the NBA chairman should know better and inform the Nigerian public on the happenings in the sector, rather than feeding them with lies, and, therefore, called on Nigerians to disregard the statement.

A press release issued by the National President of JUSUN, Comrade Marwan Mustapha, in Abuja said the “union is still fighting for financial independent of the Judiciary as contain in a Court order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, issued on January 13, 2014.”
Marwan added that a reconciliatory meeting with all the stakeholders was ongoing at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Emeka Wogu, with a view to prevailing on the government to obey the court ruling, “which is yet to be implemented by any states, including Nasarawa and Bayelsa as erroneously claimed by Mr. Ojibara.”
