Northern govs’ wives vow to promote girl-child enrolment in schools

Wives of the 19 northern states governors under the auspices of the Northern Governors Wives Forum (NGWF) have expressed their resolution to promote the enrolment of girls in schools.
Speaking yesterday during the opening ceremony of the northern governors’ wives conference at Yankari Games Reserve, Bauchi, wife of the governor, Hajiya Hadiza Mohammed Abubakar, who was also the host, noted that women in the region shared similar socio-economic problems “such as illiteracy and poverty; hence our resolve to complement the efforts of our husbands to surmount the problems.”
“It is sad that women and girls suffer rape and different kinds of abuse on daily basis in the society. Therefore, all hands must be on deck to stop the menace,” she said.
According to her, the objective of the Forum was to support the activities of the office of the wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and complement governments’ programmes to improve the plights of women and girls.
She said the Forum was currently working on women empowerment, infant health, girl child education, child abuse, among others.
In his address, Governor Mohammed Abubakar disclosed that enrollment of girls into schools in the state had increased from two to 17 per cent in 2016 due to the several programmes introduced by his administration to promote girl-child education..
The governor expressed government’s commitment to partnering with any individuals or groups working towards improving the welfare of women and youths to ensure they had better lives.
