NOUN launches book on crimes

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has launched a book that addresses the high level of insecurity, corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria in Abuja Thursday.

Delivering his welcome address, the convener and co-author   of the book, Professor Sam Smah, said the book was all about injustice done in the country in areas of insecurity, crimes and corruption.

The professor of sociology and criminology stressed that the impact of crime has enveloped the society at all phases.  He further maintained that scholars who  contributed to the book, ‘Crimes Against the State in Nigeria’, asked questions on the constant failure of policies in the  country, which is responsible for bad leadership and criminality experienced in the country.

On his part, the vice chancellor, NOUN, Professor A.U. Adamu, who was represented by Professor Shehu Usman  Adamu, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences (NOUN),  said the book had been launched at appropriate time when there are serious crimes against not only the state but individual and communities.

He appealed to the legislators, executives and judiciary both at the Federal, state and local council, to redouble efforts in addressing high level of insecurity and corruption in the country.

In the same vein, the book reviewer, Dr Samuel Odoma, said the root of crimes in the country is migration across international borders.

He reiterated that the book is to tackle what he described as high-profile criminals in the country, adding that these criminals create policies and also compromise the process of their implementation.

Odoma, who is head of department (HOD) Sociology at Bingham University Karu, Nasarawa state, disclosed that when leaders become selective in decision making, it becomes a crime against the state, instead of observing equality before the law without minding who is involved in the crime.

Also the Director of Institute of Governance and Development Studies at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK)  Professor Andrew Zamani, commended the authors for the giant stride recorded in   their efforts in publishing the book. According to the professor of psychology crimes against the state has affected national development and economic drive.

He further stressed that the points raised by the book has not being thoroughly examined for a very long time, pointing out that injustices have compromised the security of the nation.photo captions: Scholars and invited guests at the book launch
