Novelty match: Gov. Bello strikes as GYB team force ex-Super Eagles to 1-1 draw

Kogi state Governor Yahaya Bello hit the score board Tuesday in a novelty match between the state executive council team and the combined sets of 1994 and 1996 ex-Super Eagles at the Confluence Stadium in Lokoja, the state capital.

The exciting match which ended in a one-all draw, had Austin Okocha, Peter Rufai, Kanu Nwankwo, Taribo West, Tijani Babangida, Mutiu Adepoju and a host of other ex-internationals starring for the ex-national players’ team.

Speaking shortly after the encounter, Governor Bello said such sporting activity was significant and nostalgic as it would serve as a reminder to Nigerians “how united we were as a nation during the glorious days of these legends.”

Bello said beside bringing fame and honour to their fatherland, the ex-internationals used their talent to integrate the various sections of the country, who despite their ethnic differences, united for the greatest good of the country.

Contrary to the position canvassed by some senior citizens, the governor said the Nigerian youths have jointly and consistently affirmed the unity and remained averse to any divisive tendencies.

Bello, who is eyeing the nation’s presidency in 2023, further re-affirmed that the youths had come to the realisation that their destinies were in their hands, and therefore resolved to wrestle power from the older generation “who by now have nurtured the younger ones to leadership competence.”
