NPFL secures 4 spots in CAF competitions

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) have secured four spots for the next two editions of CAF competitions after seeing the spots reduced to two in the 2018/2019 season.

The rankings for each edition of both CAF competitions are done based on the performance of each league’s representatives in the continent over a five-year period.

Each of those five years is given points, with the most recent year having the highest point of five and the fifth year having the lowest point of one.

In the 2018/19 season, the performance of representatives from each club in both CAF competitions was assessed from 2013-2017, with 2017 achievement of each club in any of the two CAF competitions multiplied by five points and 2013 achievement multiplied by a point.

With various stages in each competitions also been allocated points for, the winner of the CAF champions League and CAF Confederation Cup gets a total of six points and five points respectively for their triumph in the competition.

After missing out of the four spots in the 2018/19 season, Enyimba’s semifinal-run in the 2017/18 CAF Confederations Cup, and Enugu Rangers and Lobi Stars’ progress to the group stage of this year’s CAF Confederations Cup and CAF Champions League has restored the NPFL four spots for the next two editions of CAF competitions.

Tunisia top the ranking for the 2020/21 season while Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, DR Congo, South Africa, Zambia, Sudan, Nigeria, Guinea, Angola and Tanzania completes the top twelve best ranked team for both CAF competitions for that season.

The top 12 leagues in the rankings produce four representatives in both the CAF competitions, while those outside the top twelve are limited to just a spot in each competition.
