NTI begins advanced diploma programme in environmental education

National Teachers Institute (NTI) is set to begin one-year advanced diploma programme in environmental education to address environmental issues and their challenges in the society.
NTI’s Director-General/Chief Executive, Prof.
Garba Dahuwa Azare, said the programme, which was developed in conjunction with Center for Environmental Education, Ahmedabad India, and the Commonwealth of Learning (CoL), was aimed at “promoting environmental awareness, foster positive attitudes towards the environment and inculcate environmental ethics.” He said the programme, supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Federal Ministry of Environment, “allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem solving and take action to improve the environment.” The NTI boss added that the programme “is expected to help people manage their behaviour and ecosystem to live sustainably, and enable individuals develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues and have the skill to make informed decision.” “The one-year programme intends to tackle environmental challenges to sustainable development, by addressing environmental problems such as air pollution, soil pollution, deforestation, desertification, oil spillage, erosion, waste management, sewage treatment, environmental degradation, climate change and global warming.
“Nigeria’s national policy on environment places high premium on using education to address the nation’s environmental problems and promote sustainable development,” he said.
Continuing, he said: “In developing the programme, COL was actively involved in intensive capacity building training for staff of the Institute, visualising programme frameworks, content design and development and other activities leading to the launch of the one year advanced diploma in environmental education programme.
“The programme is a non-residential online course with one week intensive contact session in each semester.
The sale of online application forms commences immediately and contact sessions begin in next month.”
