NTI trains teachers on special need, disable students

National Teachers Institute (NTI) has commenced training of teachers on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SENDs) under the 2018 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) project.

The Project, according to the Institute, is one of the five items for the 2018 SDGs workshop.

Special need and children with disabilities often found themselves in situation that put them at disadvantage due to their challenges especially when they learn under teachers with limited experience, who is also not creative, but this project is expected to address the issue.

Addressing the flag off ceremony in Kaduna, Chairman NTI Governing Council, Sen. Kaka Malam Yale, said the SENDs workshop aimed at equipping the ‎participating teachers with necessary skills and knowledge on how to teach and ‎properly integrate special need children into the mainstream classrooms in the education system.

Kaka, who was represented by Director of Examination NTI, Bashir Mamman said the resource persons have the technical and professional know how to train the teachers on how to handle classrooms with learners of varying abilities, interest and challenges.

“I strongly recommend this idea as it opposes any discrimination imposed by factors that are beyond the control of learners. I was made to understand that the resource persons engaged to facilitate the workshop have been carefully selected from reputable tertiary institutions in the country,” he said.

NTI Director General, Professor Garba Dahuwa Azare, said SENDs propagates the ideals of mainstream education in which every individual operates as an entity without discrimination.

He said the learning platform allows learners, irrespective of their conditions to learn under the same umbrella thereby fostering mutual understanding and trust between and among them.

Azare, who commended the Federal Government for its role in making the workshop a reality, added that the system also promotes peer learning among students, which is seen as an effective means of acquiring life-long learning.
