NUJ FCT pledges support for Karshi Rural Library

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has pledged media awareness support for Karshi Shukrah Farm Library and Rural Information Centre.

A press statement by the Secretary of Council, Comrade Ochiaka Ugwu, Wednesday in Abuja, quoted the Chairman of Council, Comrade Emmanuel Ogbeche, as stating that NUJ was open to development projects geared towards the greater good for greater number of people.

He said Ogbeche, who led NUJ executive to visit the rural library at Karshi, a suburb of Abuja, hailed the Executive Director of the Library, Mr. Bawa Ilyasu Umar, describing him as a great Nigerian who was poised to inform people at the rural area and make them to satisfy their knowledge needs.

“There is every need to support your library project because the council is desirous of encouraging people who are engaging in programs that really affect humanity. We will do our best to see that this library survives and serve the purpose it was established for.

“It is a demonstration of your honest resolve to bequeath society with something good. We support activities and programs that do greater good for greater number of people. Setting this kind of library in this village is worthy of commendation.

“We will drum support for you to get the relevant materials that will impart knowledge on the readers. We will see that you appear in radio to talk about your activities in the library which will certainly attract donors. We thank God that you have a succession plan as we need to get the next generation of Nigerians informed,” he said.

Earlire, Umar, who went down memory lane, said the Rural Information Centre of Karshi Shukrah Farm was established in 1994 for the purpose of providing information to the rural dwellers within Karshi and its environs.

He stated that the purpose of inviting NUJ was to enable newsmen to have a better insert of the library and report its activities to the outside world.

According to him, the library has assisted its clientele in making available resources on agriculture, health, education as well as environmental services.

Continuing, he said the centre has partnered with notable organizations like the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) an agency of United Nations and the World Bank in training of the rural people.
