NUJ opens election situation room in Abuja

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)  national secretariat has opened an elections situation room at its headquarters in Abuja ahead of Saturday presidential and National Assembly elections and subsequent elections.

A press statement by NUJ National Secretary Shuaibu Leman, Friday in Abuja,  said journalists on election duty have been instructed to report all acts of impunity against the media to the following numbers through phone calls or send text messages:
08037762492, 08034004239, 080553000100, and 08035882742.

He said, “National President of the union Comrade Chris Isiguzo while inaugurating the Situation Room, Friday, cautioned journalists to be mindful of their environment.”

Lemon also said the president urged them to avoid dangerous areas as well as to study areas of duty assigned to them and to work closely with other colleagues in groups.

According to Isiguzo,  the NUJ in realisation of the need to promote safety of journalists and peaceful elections through professional coverage of elections, had in collaboration with Media Foundation for West Africa, Accra; and International Media Support based in Copenhagen; organised a workshop earlier in the month on Safety of Journalists and Police-Media Relations in Abuja.

The statement said the president, who expressed confidence in the ability of journalists to carry out their assignments professionally, also appealed to agents of the state and all other stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of media professionals and their equipment.
