Sultan of Sokoto and President General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar has condemned the recent killings in Numan, Taraba state as well as suicide bombing in Mubi, Adamawa state, urging government to “quickly arrest the perpetrators of the heinous crimes to serve as detractors to others.”
The Sultan, in a statement issued by the JNI Secretary General, Dr. Khalid Aliyu, described the attacks as “barbaric and savage,” and called on the states and federal governments to “beyond condemnation take stringent actions that would ferry out the killers and mete out adequate punitive measures to make others think twice before committing such offence.”
The statement read in part: “Following the calamitous episodic attacks that engulfed Adamawa and Taraba states in recent time, and having followed events with keen interest, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, wishes to unequivocally state that human life is everlastingly sacrosanct. The diabolical act of the attackers remains savage and barbaric, by all standards. It is therefore condemned in the strongest terms.
“However, government at all levels must act and go beyond the rhetoric of condemnation and committee constitution without apprehending the culprits. As the traditional condemnation issued by states and the federal government is not deterring enough in checking the excesses of the Christian cut-throaters of innocent babies, children, women and the elderly. Condemnation alone can never stop this repeated madness; hence a decisive action by governments must be seen done swiftly.
“The loss in lives and property cannot be quantified and we are beginning to make mockery of ourselves in the comity of nations, if decisive action(s) is not taken by bringing to justice the perpetrators. We, however, reiterate that it doesn’t matter how long it takes, justice will certainly come, although we are not oblivious of the fact that justice delayed is justice denied.”
Continuing, it read: “JNI is seriously disturbed by these recurring incidences that tend to normalise murders and arsons within communities. This was how Kajuru and Mambilla attacks against the Muslims went unpublicised. These repeated phenomenons were unheard of in our hitherto peaceful societies in the past. Therefore, governments must be proactive through intelligence gathering, public enlightenments and orientations.
“Perpetrators of such attacks must be seen to be fully and justifiably brought to book to serve as deterrent to other would be perpetrators. It is still on record that not much is done to practically prosecute the actors in the recent ethnic cleansing of Kajuru in Kaduna state, Mambilla in Taraba state, among others.
“We call on communities to increase vigilance to forestall infiltration by suicide bombers. The Fulani leaders should also devise a tactic of protecting their settlements in collaboration with the security all the time. They should not leave only women and children alone. May Allah (SWT) forgive the deceased, console their respective families and bring respite to the injured and the traumatised.”
