Nursing mother killed, burnt to ashes in Abakaliki

A lifeless body of a mother of an 11-day old baby has been discovered in drainage behind Enugu North mass transit park along Afikpo road, Abalaliki, capital city of Ebonyi state.

The deceased, Mrs. Idenyi Ebere Ukamaka, 35, was said to have been killed and parts of her body burnt to ashes.

A source said late Ukamaka was said to have left her house at No. 11, Awolowo Street, around Water Works Road to St Theresa’s Catholic Cathedral last week where she wanted to have some spiritual meditation only for her lifeless body to be discovered in a gutter.

The deceased, popularly known as Mama Ebuka, was reportedly found dead in a drainage behind Enugu North Mass Transit motor park on January 13, 2020 with parts of her body burnt to ashes.

Blueprint gathered that, family members, after discovering the lifeless body immediately went to their village in Izzi local government area of the state to report the ugly incidence to the elders.

Meanwhile, the husband of the deceased, Mr Idenyi Festus, who reported the matter to the police said the woman left her house on January 12 and did not return and that he searched for her in the streets without result. But on a further search on the 13th, she was discovered inside the gutter and was able to identify her through her hair which was not burnt.

The police spokesman in the state, Odah Loveth, who confirmed the report, said a team led by the DCO Kenneth Owo visited the scene of incident and the remaining body parts have been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

“About 1200hrs of January 12, one Idenyi Festus, male of No. 11 Awolowo Street, Abakaliki, reported at the station that at about 4 a.m of the same day, his nursing mother wife named Idenyi Ebere Ukamaka, 35yrs, left her 11-day-old baby in their resident for early Morning Prayer, at Saint Theresa Catholic Church, Abakaliki.

“That the nursing mother did not return and he searched for his wife to no avail.

“He said at about 900hrs of 13th, he found her dead body in a gutter behind Enugu North Mass Transit.”

“He said after killing her, she was burnt to ashes. I recognised her trough the part of her head that wasn’t burnt,” he said.
