NYCN urges youths to shun vandalism

National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on youths to desist from destroying public property in their domains.
The association made the appeal yesterday at a press conference in Abuja.
Addressing newsmen, the President of the NYCN, Comrade Henry Nwabueze
highlighted President Goodluck Jonathan’s massive investment in the power sector, but lamented the poor output of electricity supply in the country due to acts of vandalism.

“We are using this medium to urge Nigerian youths to rise up against vandalism and other forms of vices in the country.
“Despite the massive investment in the power sector by the President Goodluck Jonathan led-administration, vandals and saboteurs continue to destroy our power networks.”
He reiterated calls for the establishment of a social security fund for unemployed youths and the aged in the country so as to discourage youths from social vices such as pipeline vandalism.

The event which was organised in conjunction with a youth non-governmental organisation known as Michelles Youth Initiative for Sustainable Development was tagged: “Youth Against Vandalism.”
According to the National Coordinator of the organisation, Princess Michelles Onyeneke, the collaboration with the NYCN is to enable her organisation achieve its goals of mobilising youths across the country against pipeline sabotage, especially in the Niger Delta areas where these vandals operating their nefarious activities .

She said: “The campaign is meant to enlighten youths to shun vandalism, especially the destruction of our power plants in the Niger Delta region.”
Michelles added that her organisation had considered that a robust sensitisation and re-orientation campaign programme by Nigerian youths would go a long way to facilitating the result the government hoped to achieve in the fight against pipeline vandalism.
