NYSC at 48: Gowon calls for establishment of trust fund

Former Head of State, and founding father of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Gen. Yukubu Gowon, has called for the strengthening of the NYSC scheme.

He said the scheme has become the foremost youth organisation in Nigeria and the world at large.

He also called for the establishment of the NYSC Trust Fund, saying greater efforts should be made to strengthen the scheme by providing more fund for its operations.

Speaking at the official unveiling of nine books on NYSC and maiden NYSC Film in commemoration of the 48th anniversary of the scheme in Abuja  Thursday via zoom, General Gowon said NYSC has become a source of pride, adding that the scheme has become a blessing to Nigeria.

He said NYSC operation has become a model to nations around the world as it exposes corps members to live changing opportunities and contributed immensely to the country’s development. He urged the federal government to pay more attention to the scheme with the establishment of NYSC trust fund.Giving his opening remarks, the director general, Shuaib Ibrahim, said the scheme has continued to witness improvements in all spheres despite contemporary challenges, including the latest one occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic
