National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) doctors and paramedics have conducted tests and administered drugs to more than 1000 villagers and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Damare community and surrounding villages in Girei local government area of Adamawa state.
Reports say that sick persons were subjected to instant laboratory tests conducted by scientists before being examined by 20 doctors, while a team of pharmacists administered drugs.
Some of the beneficiaries at the venue in Damare Primary School said they had been sick for weeks because they could not afford hospital bills, describing the medical outreach as life-saving.
A beneficiary, Adama Garba Isa, whose child suffered from recurrent fever, said she had given up after spending N4,000 on treatment at government hospital without success while her family failed to raise additional money, saying the NYSC initiative brought hope to many people like her.
An IDP from Ngoshe village in Gwoza area, who lives with his family in a temporary shelter in Damare village, said he could not raise enough money to treat recurring fever due to harsh economic condition.
He therefore urged the donors to sustain the medical outreach programme for the benefit of hundreds of poor people, who might not afford medical bills at the conventional health facilities.
Handing over wheel chairs to three cripples in the community, the state coordinator of NYSC, Muhammad Abubakar, said the initiative was aimed at bringing succour to rural dwellers and economically disadvantaged people.
“The essence of the initiative is to take medical care facilities to the door steps of rural dwellers. During this outreach, sick persons will be treated and offered free drugs by our corps doctors and other paramedics here. Referrals will be made where serious cases are discovered,” he stated.
