“The NYSC family nationwide is sad for the raping and eventual murder of our beloved and patriotic corps member, the late Miss Modupe Tawose. We strongly condemn the act and will go to any length to defend and fight for the rights of our members and in this case, ensure justice is delivered.
“We will do all to ensure Mr Festus Udoh is brought to book as this will serve as a deterrent to other miscreants and evil doers in the society,” he said.
The state NYSC Coordinator however admonished corps members to always be security conscious and report any security threat to appropriate authorities for prompt action.
“Corps members are to save the distress call centre numbers given to them during the orientation course in their various camps on the phones in case of emergencies.
“They are also advised to move in groups and not to follow strangers, even known people with questionable characters,’’ Udoh said.
Allow Polytechnics to award degrees – Rector
The outgoing rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, Dr. Theresa Akande, has advocated for the award of degrees by Nigerian polytechnics. She said that the only way Nigeria’s growth and development could accelerate through technological innovation is by allowing polytechnics to award degree certificates.
She said that polytechnics in some French speaking countries in Africa, were allowed to award master’s and doctoral degrees, adding that this accounted for the reason why technology driven education was much higher in those countries than in Nigeria.
Akande spoke at a press conference which was held at the polytechnic campus to mark the end of her tenure as the institution’s chief executive officer.
The former rector called on the federal government to redesign polytechnic education in order for the country to operate at the same level with other advanced countries that are making waves in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
“Francophone countries like Cote D’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau and Guinea were allowed to award master’s and doctoral degrees. I had been there and saw it worked, so Nigeria must adopt this because no country can grow in these modern days without better technological innovation,” she said.
