NYSC to build skills acquisition school in Gombe

The Director-General (DG), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brig-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim says Gombe state would get a skills acquisition school where corps members and youths from the North-east geo-political zone would be trained.

Ibrahim disclosed this on Thursday while briefing newsmen in Lafiyawo community in Akko Local Government Area of the state.

He said he was in the state to assess the level of damage from the wind storm that destroyed the NYSC skill acquisition centre as a result of the heavy down pour the previous week.

According to him, plans were already in place to convert the skills acquisition centre to a school that will be used to train corps members and Nigerians living in the North east.

He said the school which is amongst the six skills acquisition schools to be built in each of the zones is in line with the scheme’s initiative to empower youths financially while reducing unemployment in the country.

He said, “skills acquisition is very important today in view of its capacity to make youths become self-employed and even become employers of labour.”

The NYSC DG said the impact of skills acquisition centres in the fight against COVID-19 was ‘great’.

“with skills acquisition programmes we can see how corps member were contributing to the fight against the COVID-19,  by producing face masks, sanitizers, antiseptic soaps and other fabricated machines. You can see why we need to fix the place as soon as possible,” he said.

He said he would fast track necessary processes to ensure that the centre was given the needed attention for the benefit of Nigerians in the North-east zone.

He advised corps members to continue to put to maximum use skills acquired during service year to ensure that they are financially independent.
