OAUTHC to Nigerians: Don’t travel abroad for renal transplant, open heart surgery

Chief Medical Director of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC) Ile-Ife, Professor Victor Adetiloye, has assured Nigerians that the hospital has succeeded in carrying out open heart surgery and renal transplant.

Speaking at a press conference after his inaugural lecture at the hospital Wednesday, the CMD disclosed that the hospital had carried out over 70 cases of open heart surgery successfully in the last two years.

He said OAUTHC has been the leading hospital to have achieved the record and also carried out the 1st double switch procedure in West Africa.)

He said over 600 laparoscopic (pin-hole) surgeries had been performed successfully in the hospital with small amount of money; “not up to the half of money being spent to travel abroad”.

According to Adetiloye, 75 Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP) procedures had been carried out by the hospital in the last one year. He said the hospital was the only centre in West Africa performing the procedure.

The CMD, who expressed sadness over inadequate awareness of successful surgeries in the hospital, stated that the amount being spent to travel abroad would have been reduced to less than half in the hospital.

He said the hospital had also achieved in the area of Total Knee and Hip replacement with over 100 already performed within the last four years.

Recalling that the hospital had carried out 9 Renal Transplant, Adetiloye advised people to save their money by avoiding travelling abroad for transplant.
