Obasanjo: Youth group warns elder statesmen against divisive utterances

The Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO) has called on elder statesmen in Nigeria to be mindful of making statements that could divide the country on ethnic or religious lines.

Secretary general of the group, Comrade Duke Alamboye, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja said present and past leaders of the country should give the youth hope for a better Nigeria.

Comrade Alamboye was reacting to comments by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in respect of the current situation of things in the country.

The secretary general of the youth organisation noted that the whole world is going through tough times engendered by the coronavirus also known as COVID-19 pandemic.

Alamboye noted that the hardship being experienced in the country is not peculiar to Nigeria as even the advanced nations of the world are passing through unprecedented challenges.

He said that good things do not come easy and that what the Nigerian youths need now more than ever before, is prayers and encouragement from our leaders, past and present to enable us wade through these difficult times.

“The Nigerian youths need encouragement and guidance from our leaders to enable us tide through the difficulties being experienced across the world.  We can come through it.  We have overcome past challenges and will, by concerted efforts, pull through this as well”, he said.

Comrade Duke Alamboye posited that the recent approval of N75 billion investment fund for youth-driven enterprises by the Federal Government is a clear indication that the Buhari administration supports the Nigerian youth and wants to turn the economy around for good.

He further pleaded with all leaders and elders in Nigeria to desist from making statements that can divide the country on ethnic or religious lines and they should remember that the youths hold the future of Nigeria, and thus must be supported and encouraged to believe in Nigeria.
