Official pleads with FG, NGOs to sponsor sports in Kuje Area Council

The Sports Officer in the Kuje Area Council of FCT, Elisha Musa, has called on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Federal Government to sponsor various sports activities in the Area.

Musa said on Wednesday in Abuja that this would go a long way to enhance sports development in the country.

He pointed out that the major problem sports officials at the local level usually have was sponsorship.

“We could not organise the Chairman’s Cup football competition last year due to lack of funds. That is just one example of our problems, because the competition has been an annual event.

“But we hope we will be able to organise this year’s competition if we receive the necessary funding,’’ the official said.

Musa however said they were still hopeful of success at the Council, and they have started looking forward to better days.

“We have started our line-up of programmes for the year. Two weeks ago, we organised a three-day seminar for coaches and Games Masters of primary schools in the area.

“Last month we also took our handball players to Area 10 in Abuja for a one-day handball clinic, where they were taught some of the basic things in the game.

“We also taught our under-12 kids some basics about athletics, and they have started practising them on their own.

“We actually have numerous competitions this year, but we need funds to execute them all,’’ he said.

The Sports Officer said the Area Council would later in the month participate in national under-18 and under-21 handball competitions in Lagos in both the male and female categories.

“Our players have been working hard towards the competition, and they will make us proud at the end of the competition.

“They have been training morning and evening for the competition which will hold from Monday and end on March 23,’’ he said.(NAN)
