Ogbonnaya emerges EITI’s global chair on contract transparency

Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Initiative (NEITI), Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, has emerged chairman of the global body on Contract Transparency in the extractive industry.

Executive Director, Centre for Transparency Advocacy, (CTA) Faith Nwadishi, made this known in a statement released to newsmen Monday in Abuja, saying there couldn’t have been a better choice than Dr Ogbonnaya who heads NEITI.

With this appointment, Nigeria will now play leading role in conjunction with the global community to sustain global transparent extractive contract processes, especially in the extractive sector.

CTA said it was glad to admit the roles played by Dr Michael Uzoigwe of the then FOSTER and now the Country Manager of EITI for Anglophone Countries in establishing CONTRANET.

“It is therefore important to acknowledge that NEITI has impacted positively by enshrining contract disclosure in its engagement with entities in Nigeria.

“We hope that NEITI will consolidate and explore this goodwill by linking up with the global community to sustain open contract and transparent contract processes in the extractive sector in Nigeria.

“We congratulate both NEITI, Dr Orji and the entire Civil Society consortium advocating for transparent extractive resource governance and management in Nigeria. This is also to show the confidence that the global community has in the ability of Dr Orji and Nigeria to lead towards achieving a global transparent extractive contract process,” Nwadishi said.
