Ogun: Abiodun reverses Amosun’s appointments, sacks 75 Obas, creates new ministry

Ogun state government, Friday reversed the last minute appointment of 75 Coronet Obas made by immediate past Governor Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

Amosun had elevated 75 village heads to Coronet Obas, a decision that generated lot of controversies.

On assumption of office, Governor Dapo Abiodun, set up a Chieftaincy Review Committee, led by Oba Kehinde Olugbenle to review the last minute appointment of the traditional rulers.

The committee, while submitting its report in August, 2019, faulted the process of the chiefs’ elevation and recommended reversal of the appointment.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kunle Somorin, in a statement in Abeokuta disclosed that the State Executive Council (SEC) at its first meeting held on Thursday, quashed the traditional rulers’ appointment in line with the committee’s recommendations.

According to the statement, the council’s decision was disclosed by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe, who briefed newsmen on the outcome of the maiden SEC meeting.

“The Council approved the revocation of the appointments of 75 minor chiefs as Coronet Obas in Legal notice number three of 2019”, Longe was quoted saying.

She equally disclosed that the council has created a new Ministry of Transportation, saddled with the responsibility of handling road, rail, air and sea transport systems in the state.

The commissioner further hinted that the council established three new agencies under the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, namely – Ogun state planning and development permit authority, Ogun state building production management authority and Ogun state slum regeneration Authority.

The council at the meeting renamed Ministry of Commerce and Industry as  Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, while the Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning, has been changed to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

“The Council also approved the constitution of the Ogun State Tenders Board in line with the administration’s commitment to ensure qualitative and focused governance,” the commissioner added.

Longe said government agreed on the need for active advocacy on health awareness on communicable diseases like coronavirus and Lassa fever.
