Ogun Gov Abiodun sacks 75 Monarchs

The Ogun state governor, Abiodun on Friday reversed the last-minute appointment of 75 Coronet Obas made by his predecessor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

Amosun had elevated 75 village heads to Coronet Oba, a decision that generated a lot of controversies.

On assumption of office, Governor Dapo Abiodun set up a Chieftaincy Review Committee led by Oba Kehinde Olugbenle to review the last-minute appointment of the traditional rulers.

The Committee, while submitting its report in August 2019, faulted the process of the chiefs’ elevation and recommended reversal of same.

The chief press secretary to the governor, Kunle Somorin, in a statement in Abeokuta on Friday, disclosed that the state Executive Council at its first meeting held on Thursday quashed the appointments in line with the Committee’s recommendations.

According to the statement, the Council’s decision was disclosed by the Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe, who briefed newsmen on the outcome of the maiden SEC meeting.

“The Council approved the revocation of the appointments of 75 minor chiefs as Coronet Oba in Legal notice number three of 2019,” she said.

She disclosed further that the Council had created a new Ministry of Transportation, saddled with the responsibility of handling road, rail, and air and sea transport systems in the state.

“The Council established three new agencies under the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, namely, Ogun state Planning and Development Permit Authority, Ogun state Building Production Management Authority and Ogun state Slum Regeneration Authority.

“The Council at the meeting renamed Ministry of Commerce and Industry as Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, while the Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning, has been changed to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

“The Council also approved the constitution of the Ogun state Tenders Board in line with the administration’s commitment to ensure qualitative and focused governance.”

Longe said government agreed on the need for active advocacy on health awareness on communicable diseases like coronavirus and Lassa fever.
