Ogun: Man beats wife to death during argument

A 40-year-old man, Olanrewaju Bamidele, has been arrested by the men of the Ogun state Police command for allegedly beating his wife, Olanrewaju Adenike to death.

The incident, according to a statement by the command’s spokesman in Abeokuta Monday, occurred at the couple’s residence in Bisodun village via Ofada in Obafemi-Owode local government area of the state  Sunday, January 19.

The suspect was arrested following a report lodged at Ofada Police post by the victim’s son, 15-year-old, Ayomide Olanrewaju that his deceased mother had a misunderstanding with his father which resulted to fight between them. 

The suspected was said to have used a big stick to beat his wife to comma, after which he used a screw driver to stab her on the head resulting to her death.

He was however, apprehended by his neighbours while trying to secretly buried the wife in a grave he dug behind the house.

“On the strength of the report, the officer in-charge of Ofada Police post, Akinfolahan Oluseye led his men to the scene at Bisodun village via Ofada where the suspect who has been held down by the people of the community was handed over to the police and he was immediately taken to  Owode-Egba Divisional headquarters where he is currently being interrogated,” Oyeyemi said.

Oyeyemi added that:”Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is fond of beating his wife from time to time, and after beating the woman to death; he was about to bury the woman secretly when the deceased children who saw him digging a grave by the side of his house alerted their neighbors who rushed to the scene and held him down before the arrival of the police.”

The corpse of the victim had been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital mortuary, Sagamu for autopsy, while the screw driver and the stick with which the suspect used to kill the victim have also been recovered.

Oyeyemi added that the commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson had ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.
