Ogun students protest abduction of colleague

Following the abduction of a 400-level student of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun state, Nathaniel Olayinka, students in the state have given the federal and state governments 72 hours to secure his release.

Rcalled that Olayinka, a student from the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management, College of Environmental Resources Management of FUNAAB and two others were abducted Saturday at a private farm, 25kilometres away from the university campus.

The angry students who were armed with placards with various inscriptions besieged the state secretariat of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Iweiroyin, Abeokuta, demanded the rescue of Olayinka from the kidnapers unhurt, adding that failure to do so, they would occupy the streets.

Speaking with Blueprint correspondent, the SUG president of FUNAAB, Comrade Oloyode Michael and National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun Axis, Comrade Damilola Simeon, called on the government at all levels to improve the security of the country by adopting technology in securing the country, insisting that the current security strategy is archaic.

Oloyode bemoan government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the security sector in the country, adding that the provision of necessary equipments and facilities to ensure proper safety of lives and properties is sacrosanct.

“We are here today not because of anything but because of our student that was kidnapped two days ago.

“We are here to express ourselves and we came here in thousands so that the government would know the imperative and sacrosanct to provide the necessary equipment and facilities to ensure proper safety of our lives and properties of our dear citizens in the state and Nigeria as a whole.”

The Ogun NANS chairman, Comrade Damilola Simon, in his remark noted that the students body is ready to shut down the country if kidnapping of students continue unabated in the country.
