Ogunlewe, Adegoke vie for 100m medals at Commonwealth Games

The duo of Seye Ogunlewe and Enoch Adegoke on Sunday gave Nigeria a glimmer hope that the country may not be returning empty handed from the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia as bothathletes will be vying for medals in the men’s 100m final holding today. To make the podium, however, the two Nigerian sprinters will have to beat the Jamaican Yohan Blake and South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who have been dubbed favourite to win the 100m race.
Ogunlewe qualified for the final despite finishing third in his semi-final with 10.20secs, while Adegoke won his semi-final and qualified automatically having finished first in semi-final 2 in 10.24secs after setting a new personal best of 10.19secs in the heats.
In today’s final, Ogunlewe is scheduled to run in Lane 1, while Adegoke will start in Lane 5, one of the coveted Ogunlewe, Adegoke vie for 100m medals at Commonwealth Games middle lanes. Jamaican Yohan Blake and Simbine are the favourites to win the top two medals in the final. Blake, who has a personal best 9.69secs, has already run 9.90secs this year.
Simbine has a personal best of 9.89secs and has run 9.94secs this year. However in the men’s 400m Heats, both Chidi Okezie and Nathaniel Samson qualified for the semis.
Okezie clocked a season best time of 45.84s to qualify as one of the fastest losers, while Samson raced to 46.41s to finish 2nd..
It was also a good day in the field events for Team Nigeria as both Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Kalu Eze qualifi ed for the final of the Shot Put on Monday Enekwechi threw the second fastest throw of 20.66m in the qualifiers, which puts him in a very good position for a medal.
Meanwhile in the 100m women’s event the trio of Joy Udo-Gabriel, Jennifer Madu and Isoken Igbinosun all crashed out in the semi finals on Sunday
