Ohafia killing: IGP removes Abia CP, sets up probe panel

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the redeployment of the Commissioner of Police in charge of Abia state, CP Etim Okon, to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, just as CP Janet Agbede has been ordered to take over.

This is as the police board has set up a Special Investigation Panel headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (CID), DIG Anthony Michael Ogbizi, to investigation the alleged killing of one Mr. Ifeanyi Arunsi by a Policeman in Ebem Ohafia, Abia state.

The incident had sparked a riot leading to destruction of police property in the area.

Force Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DCP Frank Mba, in a press statement, Tuesday in Abuja, said the Police boss had, “condemned the glaring unprofessional conduct and misuse of firearms by a policeman at Ebem Ohafia Area of Abia state, on Friday, April 17, 2020, which led to the unfortunate death of one Mr. Ifeanyi Arunsi.

“The IGP equally condemns the resort to self-help by some people and the resultant arson and damage to government property and operational assets of the Nigeria Police Force.”

 According to him, “The IGP has set-up a Special Investigation Panel headed by the DIG Anthony Michael Ogbizi in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the unfortunate incident.

“The Panel will review police actions and inactions prior, during, and after the death of Mr. Arunsi and the circumstances surrounding the attack on the police station and damage to property.”

The spokesperson said while condoling the family and friends of the Late Arunsi, the IGP enjoined the people of Ebem Ohafia not to take laws into their hands but rather allow the course of justice to prevail at all times.

Adamu assured that the investigation into the case would be swift and thorough noting that justice would be done to all parties.
