Okene FCE attracts 15 projects, builds staff capacity

Management of the Federal College of Education (FCE) Okene said it has attracted over 15 major projects from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund) and others sources to improve learning and character moulding in the institution.

Provost of the college, Dr Umar Hassan, who disclosed this at a press conference in Okene on Saturday to mark his two years in office, said the projects were aimed at addressing infrastructural gaps in the institution.

Hassan said he inherited three on-going TETfund in September 2017, adding that since the new projects could not be accessed without the completion of the ongoing ones, the contractors were mobilised to site to complete the projects.

He said despite the critical conditions attached to the project, the management was able to attract seven other projects which include; construction of one storey building complex for early childhood care, primary, adult and non-formal education, and construction of twin 200-seater auditorium

Others, according to him,  include the construction of one storey building block of eight classrooms complex; construction of one storey building for School of Languages Lecturer’s office complex; construction of two VIP toilets with borehole facilities.

“We have also attracted two major capital projects – construction of Administrative building and construction of Hostel block for female students,” he said.

He noted that the management had also attracted other projects to the college through other corporate agencies and individuals, besides TETFund’s intervention projects which include erection of 45 solar powered street lights, drilling of two solar powered boreholes and accessories; one each in male and female hostels.

There was also drilling of one motorised borehole in the staff quarters; asphalt overlay on about 1.2km stretch of road network and donation of three of tricycle motor bikes.

Speaking on staff development, the provost said, “It is our conviction that our policy trust can only be efficiently and effectively delivered with a well trained and highly motivated work force.

“We have embarked on aggressive staff development programme, which gives adequate room and opportunities to more qualified members of staff to be sponsored for higher degrees, especially for master’s and doctorate degrees.

“Since the inception of this administration two years ago, a total of 123 staff, comprising 45 academic and 78 non-teaching staff have been sponsored for further studies. Furthermore, a total of 174 staff members have also enjoyed TETFund sponsored conferences and workshops,” he said.
