Okorie warns Ndigbo against playing ‘ethnic politics’

The United Progressives Party (UPP) national chairman, Chief Chekwas Okorie, Sunday, expressed disenchantment over ethnicity exhibited by the people of South-east geo-political region during the just concluded 2019 Nigeria presidential election.

He said the ethnicity apart from narrowing the region politically also put the people of the region at a disadvantage in the political equation of the country.

“The new awareness that we are noticing is wrongly headed, about trying to play up ethnicity which is no longer in trend now.

“Ndigbo, I can tell you, have almost surrendered. I have been in the forefront of arousing the Igbo political consciousness for years, but it seems we have achieved little”.

The party chairman, whose party aligned with the APC in the 2019 presidential election, said Sunday that he would continue to do his best, with his associates in promoting Igbo political consciousness.

“We have the number, we have the spread, we have everything it will take to be politically relevant and to decide who wins elections, particularly presidential elections”.

Chief Okorie had prior to the general election urged the South-east region to rally round President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC so that the zone would in turn count on the support of both to produce Nigeria’s president in 2023.

The APC though could not win any governorship polls in the region except that it would three senatorial seats in Abia and Imo states respectively.
