Older men, women shouldn’t determine Nigeria’s future -IRI President

President of the International Republic Institute (IRI), Dan Twining, has warned younger Nigerians to actively participate in politics and ensure that older men and women no longer determine the future of the country.
He also said his organisation is in Nigeria because of the United State’s interest to help Nigerians connect to government and to help government to be responsive to the citizens.
Speaking Tuesday’s night in Abuja, during the official launch of Responsive Political Party Programme (RPPP), IRI president revealed that “Nigeria is a great country of focus for IRI even though we are working all over Africa. Nigeria is our best focus in sub Saharan African and we will continue to invest in it.”
The launch which was witnessed by representatives of all political parties also had the deputy senate President, Ike Ekweremadu in attendance.
While urging Nigerian government to be responsible, dependable and accountable, Twining said: “This is a country whose future should not be determined by a group of older men and women because it is a country with an amazing young population. We do not take sides, but interested in advancing the political agenda of political parties who wish to compete freely and fairly and support the integrity of democratic institutions all over the country.
“Unless you are a democracy that is responsible, dependable and accountable, you are not going to succeed giving youth demands, giving the pressures, the surging desire for jobs and economic opportunities and giving the pressure from bad actors including extremists who wants to recruit disaffected young men to their course.
“We see this country as tied to the future of the United States and our interest in the world. We are not here because we feel better about ourselves, but because we see a compelling US interest in being here and help Nigeria to build and deepen their democracy.”
