Ombugadu closes case at Nasarawa gov tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Nasarawa state governorship candidate in the 2019 governorship poll, Mr David Ombugadu, has officially closed his case at the election petition tribunal in Lafia.

The lead counsel to Ombugadu, Mr Chibuike Nwokeukwu, (SAN), said after going the necessary processes as required by law to convince the tribunal they have dropped the curtain on their submissions.

He said they closed the case against the respondents, Governor Abdullahi Sule, All Progressives Congress and Independent National Electoral Commission, having presented necessary documents and witnesses.

Speaking in Lafia Thursday, Nwokeukwu expressed optimism that the evidences they presented were convincing enough for them to win, stating that 21 witnesses were presented and cross-examined.

“We realised that all parts of the case have been taken care of. So there is no point over flogging the matter at the tribunal.

“With the witnesses so far cross-examined, we have enough evidence to secure justice in our favour. That is why we closed the case,’’ he said.

However, counsel to the governor Mr Adebayo Adelogun was shocked that the petitioner opted to close his submission early.

“We were surprised because as of yesterday, the indication was that another witness would be called today. So we came prepared for that.

“Were we surprised? Yes but pleasantly surprised. We are very prepared to respond. Don’t forget we are the respondents,’’ he said.

The chairman of the tribunal, Justice Abba Bello-Mohammed, adjourned the case till Saturday (July 6) for the respondents to respond to evidence brought by the petitioner.
